Here at Crochet Foundry, we LOVE working with all the talented crochet designers that we have the privilege to showcase in our magazine. In this Designer Interview series, we'll get to know some of this month's issue's designers. Today we're talking to crochet designer Zara Powter, who contributed the Autumn Bloom Sweater crochet pattern in our November 2023 issue.
First, who are you?
Zara Powter of Lily Purl Design
How did you learn to crochet?
I actually learned how to crochet at school from my music teacher! She started an after school club and I made a scarf out of all crochet chains. My grandmother then helped me further my skills and taught me how to read patterns. We used to practice techniques by making sweaters for my dolls!
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
My design is the Autumn Bloom Sweater; a top down, seamless raglan. The design was inspired by the feeling of finding a rare Autumn bloom as the days cool down. I've loved the idea of combining crafts; and have wanted to try embroidery on a crochet garment for some time. I think it's a great way to add character to a piece and it looks incredible when finished! I wanted to create a sweater that was modern and stylish and that crocheters would want to add to their wardrobe - I always try to make my designs very customisable, so that it can fit your unique sense of style. The raglan means you can try it on as you go and adjust sleeve and body lengths as necessary, and the embroidery gives a lot of freedom as to the design of the sweater. I love wearing hand knits and sharing my craft with others, and I wanted this to be a show-off piece that would make you proud to say, 'I made this!'
What were some challenges about designing this piece?
Something that challenged me with this design was drape. Crochet usually creates a stiff, thick fabric and it can be hard to get it to sit nicely. I tried a variety of more open stitches in order to give the fabric more freedom and movement, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!
What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?
I love exploring new textures and crochet techniques, and at the moment I'm trying to create knit-look fabrics, with a modern style and great drape.
How do you hold your crochet hook?
I hold my crochet hook like a pencil in my right hand!
What are a couple of fun facts about you?
My favourite colour is pale pink, the next place on my travel bucket list is Greece, and my favourite food is sushi!
If you could tell a beginner crocheter one thing, what would it be?
Keep going! When I first started crocheting, my tension was loose, stitches were loopy and things most of the time didn't work out as I wanted them to! Trust me, no one is a perfect crocheter from the first go, so keep practicing and be patient with yourself.
