Crochet Designer Interview: Lara Carter's Noughts and Crosses Pocket Shawl

Here at Crochet Foundry, we LOVE working with all the talented crochet designers that we have the privilege to showcase in our magazine. In this Designer Interview series, we'll get to know some of this month's issue's designers. Today we're talking to crochet designer Lara Carter, who contributed the Noughts and Crosses Pocket Shawl crochet pattern featured in our December 2023 issue.

How did you learn to crochet?

I started as a lockdown learner in 2020 using YouTube videos as I found written patterns extremely tricky.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?

I love size inclusive clothing and a pocket shawl is always a great accessory to spice up a winter outfit. I wanted to experiment with different stitches which is what gave me the idea for the XOXO pattern repeat.

What were some challenges about designing this piece?

The way the colours change in the pattern mean you cannot carry the colour up the sides, so finding a way to hide the ends to reduce the sewing was a little bit of a challenge. My first one was definitely a crochet oopsie - but I did learn a lot.

What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?

To be honest, I love the versatility of the single crochet. The jasmine stitch is probably one of my favourite looking stitches!

How do you hold your crochet hook?

I think mine would be the pencil hold.

What are a couple of fun facts about you?

My favourite holiday is when my husband and I visited Japan. It inspires a lot of my crochet designs and atheistic choices in general. We also have two rescue dogs that came to the UK from Bulgaria - they are so loving!

How can our readers find you on social media?

All of my social media handles are @Hookedonewe_x

Anything else you'd like to add?

It has been a pleasure to create designs for such an amazing magazine. I really hope I can join in again in the future!
