Here at Crochet Foundry, we LOVE working with all the talented crochet designers that we have the privilege to showcase in our magazine. In this Designer Interview series, we'll get to know some of this month's issue's designers. Today we're talking to crochet designer Blazenka Simic-Boro, who contributed the Traverse Tote crochet pattern featured in our January 2024 issue.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired your design for this month?
I love geometric motifs and my inspiration for using this interesting stitch in black & white were the beautiful Portuguese floor tiles.
What were some challenges about designing this piece?
Which stitch was best to use for the handles was a dilemma, I wanted them to be sturdy enough so that they wouldn't stretch easily with use.
How did you learn to crochet?
My mother taught me how to crochet, knit and sew when I was young, and my passion for all things handmade has never ended.
What is your favorite crochet technique or stitch pattern?
Filet crochet is absolutely one of my favorites, it is a simple yet versatile technique. I also like to use different textured stitches that give the crochet pieces a nice texture.
How do you hold your crochet hook?
I'm right-handed and always crochet using knife grip. I tried to learn pen grip but I cannot say it was really a success.
What are a couple of fun facts about you?
I'm originally from former Yugoslavia, but I've been living in The Netherlands for ages.
I've always been sporty, but even though I grew up in the mountains, I can not ski.
Mathematics was my favorite subject at school, and if I couldn't become an Architect, Computer Software Engineering was my second choice.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I love doing things with my hands, learning to weave, spinning and make pottery has also been on my wish list for a long time, so there is plenty to do!
